5th National Ranking Game 2017

The National Ranking Games (NRG) are a series of 3-day tournaments organized for the SGA Elite and Development Squad players. Players outside these squads are also able to join upon approval. The NRG gives players the opportunity to accumulate WAGR points and for non squad members, the opportunity to potentially join the Elite or Development squads.

Conditions of Competition


  1. General
  2. The National Ranking Games (NRG) for 2018 are organized for SGA National and Development Squad members and selected players.  It is a counting event for the SGA Order of Merit as well as for the R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking.  It shall be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf as approved by the R&A Rules Ltd and the Local Rules approved by the Organising Committee.


  1. Eligibility
  2. The NRG is open only to National and Development Squad members and players approved by the SGA Training and Selection Sub-Committee.
  3. Players who wish to participate may apply, through their Club Captain, to the SGA Training and Selection Sub-Committee.  They are to submit their full personal particulars which should include their golfing track record.
  4. They must also have a Handicap Index of < 1.0.  Boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17 years old may have a Handicap Index of < 6.0 and < 10.0, respectively.  The Handicap Index scoring records must not have any penalty scores.
  5. The SGA Training and Selection Sub-Committee reserve the right to accept and finalize the number of participants to play in the NRG.


  1. Format
  2. The NRG shall be played over three rounds of 18 holes each and based on stroke play.  The rounds may be played at more than one venue or course.  All players will tee off from a common teeing ground.
  3. The player with the lowest gross aggregate for the three rounds will be the winner.  All ties will be decided by the count back system stated in Paragraph 8.


  1. Registration and Closing Date
  2. All eligible players must either register their intent to play or their inability to play with SGA at least one week before the date of the NRG, failing which, they may not be eligible to participate.  They should do so via email.  Telephone calls will not be entertained.


  1. Draw
  2. The draw for the rounds will be determined by the Organising Committee.


  1. Starting Times
  2. Players should report to the starter at least 10 minutes before their starting times.


  1. Submission of Scorecard
  2. Players should check their scorecards and ensure that they are correct and signed.  A player is considered to have returned his scorecard when he has handed it to the duty SGA Official and no further amendments may be made.


  1. Decision of Ties
  2. All ties will be decided on the lowest score for the last 18 holes (or the last 9 or 6 or 3 or 18th hole).  If a tie still arises, the scores for the 2nd round and, if necessary, the 1st round will be treated in the same way until a decision is reached.


  1. Suspension of Play for Dangerous Situation (Note to Rule 6-8b)
  2. When play is suspended for a dangerous situation, players must discontinue play immediately and not resume play until an order to resume play is given.  If a player fails to discontinue play immediately, he is disqualified, unless circumstances warrant waiving the penalty as provided in Rule 33-7.
  3. All practice areas that are in open areas shall be closed during suspension for a dangerous situation until they have been declared open.
  4. A suspension of play for a dangerous situation and the resumption of play shall be signaled using the host club’s warning system.


  1. Inclement Weather
  2. In the event that the first round of the NRG cannot be completed, it shall be continued the next day prior to the commencement of the second round.
  3. In the event that the second round of the NRG cannot be completed, it shall be continued the next day before the commencement of the third round.
  4. If the time remaining after the completion of the second round on the third day is insufficient to commence and complete the third round, it will be abandoned.  The result of the NRG will then be based on the completed two rounds.
  5. The NRG may be cancelled if more than one round has been cancelled.


  1. Buggies/Caddies
  2. The use of buggies will be according to the host Club’s requirements.
  3. On walking courses or when buggies are not in use, players will either carry their golf bag or use hand drawn trolleys.  No caddies will be allowed.


  1. Distance Measuring Device
  2. A player may obtain distance information by use of a distance-measuring device.  If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g. elevation changes, wind speed, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3.13.


  1. Pace of Play
  2. Rule 6-7 (Undue Delay; Slow Play) will be strictly enforced using theSGA ‘Group Pace of Play’ system.


  1. Disputes or Doubts as to Correct Procedure
  2. If there is a doubt as to the correct procedures, players are to refer to the appointed SGA Referee.  If the SGA Referee is not immediately available, a player (having notified his marker) may elect to play two balls in accordance with Rule 3-3 and obtain a ruling at the conclusion of the round, prior to signing and the return of the score card.
  3. No spectators (parents or otherwise) are to enter into any discussion on a matter under dispute.

  2. The SGA Referee’s decision on all matters pertaining to the Rules of Golf is final.

  2. The specimen Condition in the Rules of Golf is in effect – see pages 137 – 138.


  1. Groove and Punch Mark Specifications
  2. The player’s clubs must conform to the groove and punch mark specifications in the Rules of Golf that are effective from 1 January 2010.
  3. Decision 4-1/1 in the “Decisions on the Rules of Golf” is in effect – see page 70.


  1. Conduct of Players
  2. All National and Development Squad members are subject to the SGA Code of Conduct.
  3. All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be.
  4. Any action contrary to the spirit of the game such as abusive language, throwing of clubs, or other disruptive behaviour, will not be tolerated and may result in a player not being able to continue in this competition.
  5. The use of mobile phones (except in an emergency) and smoking are not allowed on the course.


  1. Insurance
  2. All players are required to have appropriate golfing insurance.


  1. Points
  2. Points will be allocated according to the R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) System.


  1. Amendments to conditions
  2. The Organising Committee reserves the right to amend these conditions.
