Seminar on Sports Injuries and Nutrition

02 May 2017

Seventeen players from the Elite and Development squads attended a seminar at the Sports Medicine Centre of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital to learn about sports injuries and nutrition. Dr Dinesh Sirisena who works with the European Tour, was the first speaker, highlighting common illnesses that athletes encounter and how to prevent and deal with them when overseas. Dr Sirisena then covered frequent injuries that golfers suffer from, those being associated with the wrist, elbow, shoulder and back. He stressed the importance of working on ‘the core’ for golfers to help prevent back injuries.

Dr Boon Kiak Yeo, a podiatry specialist, spoke about the importance of correct foot wear. He made a point of saying do not neglect the foot and ankle joints in a players exercise routine. Dr Boon also discussed how customised insoles can be a helpful solution for golfers who suffer from foot pain or tiredness after a round. Last to speak was Megan Ho, on the important subject of nutrition. Megan highlighted the benefits of food groups such as carbohydrates, fats (both good and bad), calcium, iron and different types of fluids. She ended her session with dietary tips and a meal plan that the players could follow.

The players left with a better understanding of the how to prevent and deal with injuries and a renewed focus on the importance of a good diet. Thank you to Jerome Ng who organised the evening and a number of parents who came along to support their sons and daughters. - by Tim Pinnegar, Training and Selection Committee
