The Singapore Golf Association hosted its inaugural tournament just for the kids, aged 14 and below on the 20 Feb 2017. The newly formed Junior Development Sub-Committee chaired by Mrs Lyn Sen, kicked off the SGA Junior Golf Challenge with a buzz, involving almost 80 junior golfers and another 90 parents and volunteers. With the objective of imparting knowledge of the game of golf and to nurture and support talented junior golfers who aspire to compete at the highest level, the Junior Development Sub-Committee devised the 9-hole competition to spot and identify young talents to be inducted into the SGA Junior Squad.
The excited juniors reported at the venue almost 3 hours before the tee-off time, with many parents feeling just as excited as their children. The juniors were then ferried to their respective tee boxes, where they teed off at 3.45pm to shot-gun start. Parents caddied for their juniors and gave tips on how to strategize game-play. Unfortunately, the game had to be called off after the participants completed merely 3 holes due to lightning and rain. However, loud cheers followed Mrs Lyn Sen’s announcement that there will be a replay for all participants on the 6th March at the Raffles Country Club again.
With the first tournament serving as the platform for learning and improving, the JD Sub-Comm subsequently managed the situation better with systemic ferrying of the players to their tee boxes at the second edition of the Challenge. Despite a downpour soon after tee off, the kids persevered and played on with exceptional focus and sportsmanship. It was upon the siren sounding that the golfers had to once again abandon the game.
Back at the Foyer where all parents and children gathered, SGA President Ross Tan addressed the crowd expressing his delight and appreciation at seeing such a great turnout at the event. Asking for parents’ support, President Ross hopes to work hand-in-hand with them to lift the sport of golf to the next level, with increased numbers of golfers. Many parents commented that their children had great fun, made many friends and learned to play golf at a tournament level. These experiences were invaluable and they hope SGA will continue to provide these opportunities for young golfers to look forward to.
These tournaments would not have been successful without the undying passion of Committee members putting in endless hours and money, volunteers who sacrificed time and comfort to help out and most importantly our sponsors. We would like to thank Callaway Golf Company for sponsoring caps for all players during the inaugural event, Marigold, TaylorMade/Adidas, MST Golf, Leonian and CobraPuma Golf for their generous contributions. Last but not least, to Raffles Country Club for offering their Palm course for the tournaments.
Stay tuned for the final round of this edition, when the Junior Golf Invitation unveils the top winners of the tournament. This Invitational will see many potential Olympians meet and play at the coveted Serapong course in Sentosa Golf Club on 27th March 2017!
